Mold spores are always present in the environment, both indoors and outdoors,
but the type of mold and the concentration make the difference between an
acceptable environment and one that is potentially harmful.
How Mold Develops
There are certain conditions necessary for mold
growth. The principal one is moisture. Moisture is the enemy, whether it comes
from rainwater, floodwater, groundwater, water vapor, humidity or condensation.
Moisture enables mold growth which causes breakdown of structural components of
the building. If your home or building is dry, you will not have mold.
For most people, mold is nothing more than an allergen which causes
various reactions: sneezing, coughing, itchy, watery eyes, etc. Continued
exposure can lead to more serious problems, so addressing the situation is
important. There is a percentage of the population, however, which should be
considered “high-risk”: infants and children, the elderly, those with chronic
pulmonary problems and individuals with a compromised immune system. For them,
exposure to mold can be extremely serious.
